The Diane Webb Leadership Scholarship Established

Press release

The Lawrence County Education Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of The Diane Webb Leadership Scholarship for a Summertown High School Senior beginning with the graduating class of 2014.

Diane Freda Webb passed away at her home on January 4, 2104. Ms. Webb must have the largest family in Lawrence County.  That is exactly what she considered her many close students – her own children in need of guidance, love, and approval.

While a teacher and librarian at Summertown High School for 41 years, Ms. Webb seemed to adopt as her own countless students who came to rely on her for wise counsel, unending encouragement, and welcomed reprieves from the occasional monotony of high school academia.

While holding staunchly to the principle of traditional classroom learning, Ms. Webb in many ways pioneered the concept in Lawrence County that participation in leadership based extracurricular activities offers equally important and beneficial learning tools for students.

As advisor to the student council at Summertown, Ms. Webb taught her students the value of civic involvement, social responsibility, and service to others.

She encouraged and in some cases demanded students to accept the challenge of leadership.  Ms. Webb insisted that passively meandering through the process was no way to approach life or teach students.

Instead, through sponsorship of hundreds of student events, activities, and projects, Ms. Webb gave students the chance to make a difference in the lives of other students all the while enriching themselves.

Ms. Webb touched the lives of generations of students.  And she did it all in the background, allowing her students the credit.  For those students, Ms. Webb’s legacy and teachings will forever continue to guide and inspire.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the Diane Webb Leadership Scholarship may do so by contacting Summertown High School 931-964-3539 or mailing checks to The Lawrence County Education Foundation, P.O. Box 961, Lawrenceburg, TN 38464.
